The Floridita cradle of the daiquiríThe Floridita cradle of the daiquirí
Bar and Restaurant located at the intersection of Obispo and Monserrate streets in Old Havana, Cuba. Founded in 1817 with the name of La Piña de Plata, it reached its true popularity worldwide in the 1930s when it began to be frequented by the writer and Nobel Prize for Literature Ernest Hemingway, who was then staying at the Hotel Ambos Worlds.
So much was the taste of the famous writer for the Cuban cocktail Daiquirí that even after permanently moving to his home in Finca Vigía, he frequently traveled to Old Havana, to visit The Floridita, which he called, the best bar in the world and which he immortalized with his famous phrase "My mojito in La Bodeguita, my daiquiri in La Floridita".
In this way he was indissolubly tied to the figure of Hemingway el Floridita, so that today it is not only a bar and restaurant, one of the biggest tourist attractions in Havana, but also a place of homage to the writer. On its walls there are photographs of the writer and in one corner of the bar there is a sculpture of him, next to which tourists are photographed daily on their journey through the streets of Old Havana.
The bar is a good place to spend a pleasant time, enlivened by the music of groups that play traditional Cuban music. It is also a place with air conditioner where you seek shelter in the hot afternoons of Havana's summer. Their bartenders are highly trained in Cuban and international cocktails, experts in the cocktail that gives its slogan "La cuna del daiquirí".
It is said the Daiquirí was invented in the east of the island and was perfected in El Floridita by the legendary barman Constantino Ribalaigua. Its recipe is very simple, consisting of: rum, lime juice, sugar, maraschino liquor and ice.
Numerous personalities have visited the Floridita over time. Among those that stand out: Jean-Paul Sartre, Giorgio Armani, Jean-Michel Jarre, Matt Dillon, Paco Rabanne, Ted Turner and Jane Fonda, Naomi Campbell, Compay Segundo, Ana Belén and Víctor Manuel, Spencer Tracy, Rocky Marciano, Joaquín Sabina, Pablo Milanés, Silvio Rodríguez, Jack Nicholson, Fito Páez, Danny Glover among many others.
